Exercise 02

WordPress Portfolio Site

In this exercise you will learn the basics for creating and maintaining a WordPress web site.

Each student will recieve a sub-domain hosted at "art444sdsu.com". Be sure to log into your WordPress site in a timely manner to reset the default password to a personal password of your choice.

Each student will also recieve a FTP (File Transfer Protocal) account to individually manage their site. I will email each student their individual FTP credentials.

I want you to research resources for working with WordPress themes. I have found various YouTube videos helpful as well at the documentation theme developers provide.

Review the videos in the RESOURCES section below.

Student Learning Outcomes

Once this project is complete you should be able to:

  • Ability to follow project requirements;
  • Complete research specific to student portfolio trends;
  • Establish and maintain an FTP site;
  • Research and install a WordPress theme;
  • Demonstrate ability to "set-up" and "manage" a WordPress site;
  • Demostrate ability to over-ride CSS styles within a WordPress theme;
  • Ability to install and modify WordPress plugins;

FIRST

Log in to your site. You can access your site at: art444sdsu.com.

To access your individual site you will add your last name all lower case with no spaces followed with a "." before the main domain name.

Example:
prior.art444sdsu.com > go there

SECOND

Change the default password.

THIRD

Begin your search for a WordPress theme and install your theme.

IMPORTANT! Delete "all" themes not in use. Only keep your "LIVE" theme. This is due to file management limitations on the server.

Fourth

Read the documentation provided with the theme. Do personal research on how to work with WordPress.

Fifth

Begin adding content to your WordPress portfolio site.
